NECOL REGATTA The NECOL One Design Regatta – the best way to mess about in boats - was, once again, a resounding success. This year 8 members of the Norfolk Broads Yacht Club traveled to Sint Maarten to take part in the regatta, adding an international inter-club challenge to the event.  The fleet comprised 12 crews sailing 8 Sunfasts from Lagoon Sailboat Rental on a rotation basis. The competition was fierce on Saturday morning with a protest on the start line of the first race.  By the end of racing on Saturday there was no clearly defined winner. After a very light start, the wind on Sunday morning was light and steady offering exceptional conditions for testing the sailors abilities to read shifts.  Despite the tranquil conditions there was an unfortunate mishap when skipper Dr Luc Knol fell and dislocated his shoulder.  The racing was intense and competition keen making it impossible to determine the eventual winner with any degree of certainty before the end of the regatta. Three crews tied on 30 points after 15 races making it a nail-biting finish.   First place went to Andrea Scarabelli and his crew, Christopher Marshall and Derek Little, sponsored by Budget Marine/ GILL.  Second came Paul Miller of Team Carib Data,  and third was Frederic de Mesel of Team “Burning Flames” – an Antiguan Team. Of the Inter-club Challenge, it was St. Maarten Team 1 (Andrea Scarabelli / Robbie Ferron and Bernard Sillem) that aced the trophy. Special thanks go to the organizers from Sint Maarten Yacht Club and all the volunteers that make such an event possible and memorable.
