Shifty winds throughout the Final Grant Thornton Dinghy Series couldn't spoil the fun!

Updated: Jun 29, 2019

This Saturday was the Grant Thronton Dinghy Series Finale & End of Season Party. The day was filled with spectacular racing on the crystal-clear waters of the Lagoon, although the shifty winds added an extra difficulty level. The 30 enthusiastic sailors were competing in four different classes during this last Dinghy Series and did everything they could to get in the top three of their class.

Emma Lennox was the one that took the first place in the Dinghy Series Optimist class. Justin Pieterse ended up 1st in the Laser Class. Jordan Pieterse ended up second in the Laser Class, but still managed to get first in the Pico Class overall. Jesse Lake & Mathijs Detering took first prize of the RS Vision Class and Robbie Ferron’s team became first in the Sunfast 20 Class.

In addition to the normal prices, other certificates were also issued to mark the end of the sailing season. ‘’I am so proud of all the students that really tried their best and worked really hard this year. They made a real effort and it paid off’’, said Reinier Calkhoven (Sailing instructor at the Sint Maarten Yacht Club). Special attention went to Emma Lennox who ended up as third at the St Barth’s Mini Bucket in the Opti Class. She received a rash guard with her name on it. And there was a big applause for Jesse lake, who followed the youth sailing program and later became assistant of Reinier Calkhoven. He is going to leave the island to study in the Netherlands.

To ‘celebrate’ the end of season, the Sint Maarten Yacht Club held an End of Year Season Party for all the competitors, parents and members including Music, Domino’s pizza and ’Randy’s Frozen Yoghurt Truck’ passed by for some delicious ice cream. “It was another great sailing year and we are looking forward to our Sailing Summer Camp, starting on Monday, the 17th of June till the 9th of August" sais Michele Korteweg, the General Manager of the Yacht Club. “A huge thanks go out to our sponsor Grant Thornton, who helped to make this happen and who revealed that they are going to sponsor again next season”.
