Soon Series Day 2, a rainy racing day.

Twenty (20) candidates participated in the Soon Series Day 2 on October 8th, 2022. Sint Maarten Yacht Club held their annual Dinghy Race, called the Soon Series. Competitors from Friars Bay French Saint Martin and students from the Sint Maarten Yacht Club sailing school signed up and took part in the race. The Soons Series are part of the Grant Thornton Dinghy Season Championship.

The Soon Series race day 2 consisted of 3 races in 2 different classes. This Saturday only the Optimist class and the Laser class were represented. There was no participation in the RS Quest and Zest class.

In the Laser class competitors raced for the win. Justin Pieterse proved his consistency once again with 3 first places. This made him the overall winner of the Soons Series in the laser class. Jordan Pieterse and Emilien le Norman ended up in a tie for second and third place, both sailing a Laser 4.7. Emilien ended up breaking the tie and came in second place, where Jordan took third.

Eleven (11) Optimist Sailors participated in Soons Day 2. After Soons Day 1 Corentine Corroy was in first place in the Optimist Class, she managed to keep this position and took the overall win of the Soons Series. Sarah Michaux came in second and Clement le Normand took third place. There was some tight racing going on in the Optimist Class.

For the first races of the new sailing season, we saw that the competitors were excited to race again after a summer of waiting and preparation. “Everyone was still excited to race despite the rain. The competitors had to face challenging conditions with very shifty winds and sudden squalls coming through” Said Sailing Instructor Xanthe”.

The Soon Series was a success, well planned preparation and teamwork was done to have this racing day set and ready. Sint Maarten Yacht Club would like to encourage the youth and fellow experienced sailors to register, for our next year season.

The next Dinghy Race is scheduled for November 26th, the first day of the Aberson Series. A selected group of SXM sailors is preparing for the Caribbean Dinghy Championship, a 3-day regatta on October 21, 22 and 23, where the surrounding Caribbean islands are bringing in their best sailors and will race for individual results as well as the title ‘Best Caribbean Island’. The Caribbean Dinghy Championship will be sailed in Simpson Bay, Sint Maarten.

The results for Soon Series Day 2 were announced that afternoon along with prize giving and posted onto the Sint Maarten Yacht Club Website.
