Simpson Bay, St. Maarten – May 7th, 2022
The Sint Maarten Yacht Club was pleased to hear that the World Cruising organization decided to come back to Sint Maarten for the start of the 2022 ARC Europe, after last year’s success. In 2021 the organization decided to start their Rally from Sint Maarten for the first time.
Together with the Sint Maarten Marine Trade Association, IGY Marinas, the Maritime School of the West Indies, the Sint Maarten Tourism Bureau and World Cruising a great program was put together for the participants in the week before the start of the Rally.
The Tourism Bureau organized for ARC Europe participants to experience St. Maarten’s Annual Carnival celebrations at the Block Party during the Carnival Parade in Philipsburg on May 1st. This provided them with a unique and colorful experience of St. Maarten’s biggest cultural festival.
On May 2nd the official welcome party was hosted at the Sint Maarten Yacht Club. An opportunity for the rally teams to meet each other, meet the organization and mingle with other competitors! Nancy Burzon, representative of the Sint Maarten Yacht Club Board of Directors welcomed the competitors and World Cruising back to our Friendly Island.
The Maritime School of the West Indies organized a life raft demonstration at the IGY Isle del Sol Marina pool on May 3rd, followed by a BBQ, hosted by IGY Marinas and the Sint Maarten Marine Trades Association. This was a great networking opportunity for the competitors with local maritime business owners. Brian Deher, IGY’s Regional Director Caribbean and Central America, took the opportunity to welcome all the crews and wished them well for the crossing and hope they would return to Sint Maarten and the Caribbean in years to come.
The following day took participants on an island tour, organized by the Sint Maarten Tourism Bureau. The itinerary took the sailors to iconic locations on both the French and Dutch side and made it the perfect opportunity to explore the island.
After a successful skipper’s briefing, 19 boats lined up for the official start of the ARC EUROPE on Saturday, May 9th at 12 PM. The first part of their journey is taking them to Bermuda where they will have some time to prepare for the final leg of the rally, from Bermuda to Europe.
The Sint Maarten Yacht Club is looking forward to working with World Cruising in hosting the ARC again for years to come.
